Student Presents at 2009 CROI

Charles Venuto presented a poster, “Comparison of Aniretroviral Therapy Pharmacokinetics and Clinical Monitoring Parameters in HIV-Infected Patients With and Without Substance Abuse,” at the 16th Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections. The conference is a meeting of the world's leading researchers working to understand, prevent and treat HIV/AIDS and its complications.

UB Research Makes a Difference in the World

Dr Chiedza Maponga, Kelly Tooley, and UB SPPS PharmD candidates Megne Tantse and Nida Siddiqi presented, "Global HIV Pharmacotherapy: Building Minds, Changing Lives," during International Education Week, hosted by UB's Office of International Student and Scholar Services. The November 19, 2008 presentation provided students, faculty and staff with an opportunity to learn how UB research makes a difference in the world through the International Center for HIV/AIDS Pharmacotherapy Research and Training (ICHAPRT) program. ICHAPRT has built a bridge between two Universities and changed the lives of Zimbabweans living with HIV/AIDS. ICHARPT is an initial collaborative project of the UB School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences' Office of International Education and Research. The ICHAPRT program has recently blossomed from it's inception in 2001, and has provided learning opportunities for undergraduates, as well as post-graduate and post-doctoral training for pharmacists and pharmacologists from Zimbabwe, Taiwan, and Thailand.

Symposium

  The Steering Committee of the CoEBLS Medication Management Research Network (MMRN) held a one-day symposium on June 13, 2008 at the NYS Center of Excellence to discuss the current opportunities to integrate electronic health records, ePrescribing software, bar code technology, biomedical ontology, and digital, personalized medical records in a statewide initiative.  This symposium was a collaboration with the NYPASE and NY PASE Technology Subcommittee with the University of Buffalo, UB Center for Excellence in Biostatistics and Infomatics, the test pilot work group, and the Upstate medication management regional network.
  The  goal is to develop a vision and operational plan for interoperability among regional hubs across New York State leading to an integrated MMRN

Frontier Science

Visiting Faculty from Thailand Trains at PRC

Dr Paveena Sonthisombat, an Assistant Professor with the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Naresuan University in Thailand, completed a two-month training this summer with the UB Pharmacotherapy Research Center and ECMC HIV/AIDS Treatment Education Program. Dr Sonthisombat earned her PharmD in 1996 from University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), and completed residencies in pharmacy practice and infectious disease, as well as a three year fellowship with UIC Professor Dr Larry Danzinger. In addition to teaching at Naresuan University, Dr Sonthisombat provides HIV inpatient and outpatient services at a nearby hospital. Dr Sonthisombat received training in therapeutic drug monitoring, medication adherence and resistance testing.

PRC Investigator Invited to Atttend NIDA Research Development Diversity Program

NIH Fogarty International Center trainee presents at NERCDG

Tongai Chizanga, an NIH Fogarty International Center trainee from Zimbabwe, completed training this year at the UB PRC CAL. He presented, “Method Development for the Analysis of Stavudine, Lamivudine and Nevirapine in Human Plasma Using HPLC with UV Detection.”  Mr. Chizanga is a pharmacist and a graduate research and teaching assistant at the University of Zimbabwe.

PRC HIV Specialty Resident Receives Award

Congratulations to Dr Rustin Crutchley, PharmD, on receiving an award for best overall presentation at the UB School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences Resident Research Presentation Day, held April 18th, 2008. PRC Undergraduate Research Student Receives Award

Mr. Frank Acheampong, received an Outstanding Undergraduate Research, Scholarship and Creativity Award at the 4th Annual UB Celebration of Academic Excellence for his poster presentation, “The influence of CYP3A5 Polymorphism on Trough Concentrations of HIV-1 Protease Inhibitors.”  Mr. Acheampong,  an undergraduate student in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, in the UB School of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences.  His research is being conducted in the UB Pharmacotherapy Research Center, Core Analytical Laboratory and the Pharmaceutical Genetics Laboratory. Targeted Neuroprotection of HIV-1 Associated Neurologic Diseases

Pharmacotherapy Research Center investigators (GD Morse, JS Hochreiter) have received a subcontract from the Department of Neurology at the University of Rochester through the National Institute of Mental Health entitled “Targeted Neuroprotection of HIV-1 Associated Neurologic Diseases.” As Co-investigators, the PRC will contribute to protocol design, novel drug assay development, pharmacology study coordination and pharmacokinetic analysis.

PRC Investigators Visit China, Receive Visiting Professorship

PRC Investigators Dr Patty Havard and Dr Qing Ma recently visited Shanghai Public Health Center Fudan University in Shanghai, China upon the invitation of Prof. Hongzhou Lu, the Center's Executive Director. During their six-day visit,  Drs Havard and Ma exchanged information on HIV pharmacothearpy, learned about the Center's research capacity and explored potential collaborations between the Fudan University and the Pharmacotherapy Research Center, University at Buffalo .  Drs Havard and Ma delivered seminars to the Center's staff, including physicians, pharmacy directors, basic and clinical researchers. Both Dr Ma and Dr Havard were awarded Visiting Professorships by the Center at Fudan University in conclusion of their visit.

Grants Awarded

NIAID: Dr. Gene Morse received supplemental funding from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases through Social & Scientific Systems in the amount of $81,400 for the UB Pharmacology Specialty Laboratory for an ongoing clinical trial, ACTG 5202, which is evaluating HAART regimens in antiretroviral-naive patients.

NIMH: Dr. Gene Morse is a Co-Investigator and will coordinate the clinical pharmacology and laboratory components of projects to be conducted in a grant entitled "Targeted Neuroprotection of HIV-1 Associated Neurologic Disease" funded by the National Institute of Mental Health through the University of Rochester. This project is funded through July 31, 2010 totaling $219,822.

ICHAPRT Trainee Arrives from Zimbabwe

Tongai Chizanga, RPh and MPhil candidate, arrives March 12 from the University of Zimbabwe as the second trainee in the International Center for HIV/AIDS Pharmacotherapy Research & Training (ICHAPRT) program. Mr. Chizanga will complete a 10 week laboratory training module, which involves multiple aspects of pharmacology laboratory operations from protocol planning and sample management to method development and validation.

Mr. Chizanga will be supervised by Dr. Gene D. Morse, and will study under several mentors to maximize his learning experiences. Mr. Chizanga’s learning experiences will support work on his MPhil research project titled, “Population Pharmacokinetics of Nevirapine and Efavirenz in HIV-Infected Adults: The Impact of Concurrent Chronic Use with Hypoxis Hemerocallidea and Allium sativum.”

 

Tinashe Mudzviti, a Masters candidate from the University of Zimbabwe, received training through the ICHAPRT program during the summer of 2007. Mr. Mudzviti was our first trainee to "cross the bridge" in this exciting technology transfer program.

Mr. Mudzviti and the ICHAPRT program were featured in the UB Reporter http://www.buffalo.edu/news/8784, and Mr. Mudzviti was interviewed on Gabe DiMaio's WBFO program, UB Edition.

ICHAPRT is an international collaboration project of the Pharmacotherapy Research Center's Office of International Pharmacotherapy Education and Research.

PRC Investigator Chairs NIH/NIAID ACTG Hepatitis Function Working Group

Dr. Gene D. Morse has been appointed to Chair the Hepatitis Function Working Group of the Hepatitis Research Committee for the NIH/NIAID AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG). This committee is one of four committees that develops and prioritizes the global research agenda for the ACTG in the area of hepatitis co-infection.

UB PSL Provides Real-Time Results

The UB Pharmacology Support Laboratory has joined the AIDS Clinical Trials Group A5235 protocol team for a study titled, "Phase II, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled, Double-Blind Study of Minocycline in the Treatment of HIV-Associated Cognitive Impairment."  The UB PSL will provide real-time atazanavir therapeutic drug monitoring to assist the team in examining whether minocycline decreases the plasma concentration of atazanavir .

PRC Investigators Awarded for Most Cited Paper

An article authored by PRC Investigators Dr. Valerie Frerichs, Robin DiFrancesco and Dr. Gene Morse has been awarded as one of the "Top 50 most cited articles" in the Journal of Chromatography B from 2002 to 2007. The article, "Determination of protease inhibitors using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry," was published in the Journal of Chromatography B: Analytical Technologies in the Biomedical and Life Sciences, Volume 787, Issue 2 (2003), Pages 393-403.

Primary Results Presented at CROI 2008

Results of a 5-yr, national therapeutic drug monitoring trial conducted by the NIH AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) were presented at the 15th Annual Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections held in Boston on February 4th 2008. 

The study was developed and conducted by the ACTG Protocol 5146 Study Team and was entitled, “A Phase II Randomized Controlled Trial Evaluating the Impact of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) on Virologic Response to a Salvage Regimen in Subjects with a Normalized Inhibitory Quotient (NIQ) <= 1 to One or More Protease Inhibitors”.

The UB SPPS PRC Core Analytical Laboratory was the central pharmacology laboratory for the trial and provided therapeutic drug monitoring results for dose-escalation during this pivotal national study.  Dr. Gene Morse and Dr. Robert DiCenzo, PRC Investigators, were clinical pharmacologists on the study team.  Robin DiFrancesco, PRC CAL laboratory Manager, served as the Laboratory Technologist.

Intercontinental Training Initiatives

Dr Gene D. Morse, Pharm.D., and Dr Qing Ma, Ph.D., presented Intercontinental Training Initiatives at the January 2008 PRC Research Forum. To date, the UB PRC has been proud to host trainees from Africa (Zimbabwe) and Asia (Thailand, China). The UB PRC has plans to develop training initiatives with a number of other countries including India and South Africa.

UB PRC Research Scholar from China Trains at ECMC

Dr Yun He, a graduate of Zhengzhou University Medical College, is completing her training at the ECMC Immunodeficiency Services Clinic through the UB PRC Research Scholar Training Program. Dr Chiu-Bin Hsiao has been mentoring Dr He in the area of clinical applications of pharmacology. Dr QIng Ma provided Dr He with orientation to the PRC. The program provided support for Dr He to attend the 47th annual Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy meeting to learn more about PK/PD of HIV medications as part of her Clinical Pharmacology training.

UB HIV Specialty Resident Visits South Africa to Discuss PRC Collaboration

Dr. Rustin Crutchley, currently a UB HIV specialty resident at the Erie County Medical Center, recently visited South Africa to conduct meetings with HIV researchers and caregivers in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Dr Crutchely discussed potential clinical and translational research collaborations that can be developed between UB and HIV/AIDS treatment and research centers at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg and the Centre for Proteomic & Genomic Research in Cape Town.

ICHAPRT Day of Recognition

The ICHAPRT (International Center for HIV/AIDS Pharmacotherapy Research and Training) Day of Recognition was held on August 9, 2007. The Vice Provost for International Education, Dr. Stephen Dunnett, as well as Dr. Wayne K. Anderson, Dr. Gene D. Morse and Dr. Chiedza Maponga, spoke in support of the program. Dr. Maponga, the ICHAPRT program director, was recently interviewed on Voice of America: http://www.voanews.com/english/Africa/Zimbabwe/2007-08-09-voa61.cfm.

ICHAPRT is an international collaboration project of the Pharmacotherapy Research Center Office of International Pharmacotherapy Education and Research. ICHAPRTis an initiative from the UB School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (SoPPS) in collaboration with the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) School of Pharmacy.  ICHAPRT seeks to identify methods that have been successful at UB, and through formalized training and education activities, transfer these approaches to developing countries.
